The best start in life

By introducing your children to the dentist early, good habits are encouraged. We’ll teach them how to brush and floss properly, educate them about their teeth and the importance of a healthy diet. To make sure their teeth have the best protection, we offer services such as fluoride treatments, cleaning, white fillings and even sports mouthguards for kids’ teeth.

Sometimes a treatment or a procedure may sound unpleasant which can cause anxiety in one’s mind, which could be a great source of stress. Mostly this stress/anxiety stems from a bad childhood experiences which is engraved in you memory or being anxious about a dental injection. It could also be due to a feeling that you may be judged by the doctor, as being the worst mouth they have seen or just the feeling of a dental chair makes you uneasy.

If you feel any of the above, the best thing that you could do is to talk to us. We will make sure that we can help you overcome this feeling of distress. You need to be with a dentist you are comfortable with. This way you can talk to us about any concerns or fearful feelings you have. You can ask us as many questions as you like. At Crescent Dental, we love explaining things and thus empowering our patient to make the right decision – With the correct knowledge you will realise that certain treatments are not as bad as they seem.

You might have heard a lot of horror stories about a dental procedure from people or may have had a bad experience yourself in the past. However keep in mind that nowadays dentistry has come a long way and modern treatments are more painless than ever before. There is a wide variety of pain control that we can offer which can include pre-operative pain medication, anxiety relief medication, painless injections, Relative analgesia and conscious sedation.

At Crescent Dental uur kind and caring staff members are always there to answer questions, concerns and help you out wherever possible. Dental Local anaesthetic has been administered the same way (with a manual syringes and \needle)since the 19thcentury. Now technology has even changed the way we administer anaesthesia. The Computer Assisted Anaesthesia System is an alternative to standard injections (local anaesthetic) to control pain during clinic procedures.

Conventional methods of anaesthetic delivery create pressure when anaesthesia is injected which results in a lot of pain. Our computer assisted local anaesthetic system controls the flow rate ofthe anaesthesia into the gum, minimising pain and anxiety. For many people the main reason of associating an unpleasant experience with dental treatment is the need for an injection to be numbed up and not the actual procedure itself.

At Crescent Dental we take advantage of new technology and Computer Assisted Anaesthesia System to make sure that your appointment with us is as comfortable as possible. It also allows us to offer our patients a painless and more comfortable experience, which is well ahead of the traditional dentistry. Another advantage of using this system is that we are able to numb the tooth being operated on individually and because there is minimal residual numbness and patients are able to get back to their life without a numb face.

Dental injections may cause discomfort for many reasons:

  • It could be due to the location of the mouth being numbed. Some area of the mouth have a tougher gum covering and hurt more.
  • Injection speed: When the solution in the needle is forcefully injected into the tissue is can cause a lot of pain.
  • Needle insertion: The initial breaching of skin by the needle also causes pain however usually this is like a pin prick which only lasts a few seconds.

There are a few steps that we can take to minimize or n some cases remove the pain altogether:

  • Using a computer controlled anaesthetic system – This technique is more precise and far less painful than conventional injections. The secret is the intelligent and gentle administration of anaesthetic solution, which starts at a very slow flow rate and then gradually increases in speed. This means that there isn’t any pressure created while injecting which is the main cause of pain. We are able to administer slowly and more accurately.
  • We can numb you with numbing pallet before even the initial prick so you don’t even feel that.
  • There is evidence that if injection is at or near body temperature it is far less painful as it can pass through tissue easily.

Fear and anxiety about the dentist is an issue for so many people. We understand how scary and stressful it can be. At Crescent Dental we want out patients to have a positive experience and that’s why we offer Penthrox. This is a solution to ease those unpleasant feelings so you can feel more relaxed in the dentist’s chair.

What is Penthrox?

Penthrox(also known as the green whistle) is an inhaler used to reduce feelings of pain and anxiety. It is self-administered and makes you more relaxed and calm during a dental procedure. It takes upto 6-8breaths to attain the desired levels of pain and anxiety relief. Penthrox is a very effective drug as it acts very fast and is completely safe. As the patient holds the inhaler during an appointment, it is completely in their control to administer the drug when you feel you need it.  Generally, patients do not feel any unpleasant side effects however, after your appointment there would be a need for someone to drive you back home as you may experience aftereffects.

At Crescent Dental, we can help you reduce the anxiety produced by the thought of your dental procedures, with our conscious sedation technique, called happy gas (also known as laughing gas). Happy gas is a combination of nitrogen and oxygen in form of a gas that when inhaled, makes you feel more calm and relaxed while remaining conscious and responsive. Because it is such a safe drug it is especially beneficial for children undergoing dental.

The dosage of Happy gas is customized for each patient depending on your specific needs. It is usually administered pre-emptively for calming patients for small procedures and alsofor procedure requiring local anaesthetics. Please feel free to ask our friendly staff about the use of Happy gas next time you visit our Clinic.

Administration of Happy gas requires special equipment with which the dental practitioner can monitor the amount of both gases inhaled at any time. Not only that but the dentist needs to be properly trained and certified to operate this equipment as well as be able to recognise any signs of overdose and be able to cope with patients with such signs and symptoms.
